Master Food Volunteer: Russ Zub

One of our weekly pantry partnerships is with the Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Master Food Volunteers. Every Tuesday evening, clients and staff are always eager to see one face: Russ Zub’s.

Russ, when did you first begin your cooking demonstrations at our pantry?

I began cooking demonstrations September 2024 after I received training through the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE), Fairfax County to become a Master Food Volunteer (MFV). I was fortunate to have two dedicated and talented instructors, first with Katie Strong and presently with Leah Turton.

What is your favorite part of this weekly volunteering?

My favorite part of volunteering is the engagement with clients to understand their backgrounds, and we often discuss their favorite recipes or cooking techniques. I’m honored to be an active part of this organization, supporting our community.

Have clients had a favorite recipe that you’ve made?

I would say one favorite is the Vegetable Korma (mildly spiced Indian curry) because of the rich blend of spices, creamy texture, and fragrance. A second favorite is the Healthy Zucchini Bread, which is very moist and made with whole wheat.

Do you have a fond memory of your time here?

We try different recipes from around the world. I prepared and served a vegetarian and gluten-free Mediterranean Harira Soup recipe.  One of our clients said the recipe was a traditional family favorite, and she gave me a nod of approval after trying the sample.
