In July, we held two summer camps for kids! Angelitos Spanish Immersion Education facilitated the Adventure Camp for the little kiddos (ages 2-7), and volunteers Stephanie Patterson and Geoff Wilson ran Art Camp for our older kiddos (8+).
Angelitos’ Summer Adventure Camp was a circus-themed program that focused on developing emotional intelligence (EQ) skills. Throughout the four-day camp, the kids learned about identifying feelings, making friends, managing frustration, and building confidence! Among the daily activities were a craft station, story time, and games, all of which were centered on the daily EQ skill.
During Art Camp, the older kiddos got to work on their creative expression skills! Over the four days, they explored various art media, including yarn, clay, painting, and printmaking.
On July 24th, some of our LCAC kiddos went on a day trip to Mason Neck State Park! This annual trip was chaperoned by our Executive Director, Rob, and Case Manager Ashly, and was organized in partnership with the Friends of Mason Neck and park rangers!
The day started with an hour-long canoe trip in Belmont Bay. Many of the kids had never canoed before, but that didn’t stop them from asking Rob, “Can we do this all day?” Following their time on the water, the kids went on a mile-long hike where they had great views of wildlife and plants! The kids saw wild turkeys, ospreys, turtles, and learned about pawpaw trees, a fruiting tree native to the Eastern U.S.
