We’re excited to share that LCAC registered as a new Girls On The Run Site this spring! Girls on the Run is a national program that uses running to encourage healthy habits and to empower girls to embrace their inner strength. When we found out that Lorton Station Elementary School couldn’t host their group, we were happy to step in for the Spring season.
Over the past 12 weeks, our amazing 12 participants ran twice a week with LCAC at the Lorton Community Center. Throughout the season, the girls not only trained for a 5k but also took the initiative to organize a community impact project!
The girls came up with the idea to create THANK YOU bags for the volunteers at the Lorton Animal Shelter for their impact project. The goodie bags had hand-made thank you cards, snacks to keep volunteers energized, tissues, mini hand sanitizers, and of course some treats for our furry friends!
LCAC Program Manager/Coach Yareli shared, “During the season, our girls learned many life skills. They learned that we can make a positive impact by thinking small. We can make a difference even if we have limited resources.”
To end our Girls on the Run season, the girls ran in a 5k (3.1-mile) race on Sunday, May 18th!
