Mission Statement

The mission of the Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC) is to enhance the quality of life by providing food, basic needs, and self-sufficiency programs through the generous support of our community.

Organizational History

In 1975, LCAC began as an all-volunteer organization working out of a local school and a church basement. The organization’s founding was in response to the needs of low-income families in the southeast quadrant of Fairfax County, which was an under-served area of the county. By the time LCAC moved into its current location, a 20th century house, in 1983-84, the organization had its first part-time staff member. For LCAC’s first 15 years, the agency served as a resource for information and collected and distributed food year round with the greatest emphasis during the holiday season.

As Lorton and the surrounding area has experienced great change and development during the 1990s and into the 21st century, the challenges facing low-income families remain a constant and growing need. Today, LCAC has a professional staff of six full-time and four part-time staff that serves a diverse population of ages and ethnic backgrounds. In 2011, LCAC added a 2,000 square foot food building, paid for by private dollars, that includes a walk-in refrigerator and freezer. LCAC also operates, Lorton’s Attic, a thrift store that serves the dual purpose of providing clothes and household items to the organization’s clients, as well as, a revenue stream to support LCAC.
