Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC) Chosen for 2016-17 Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington

Washington, D.C. — LCAC is honored to announce its continued recognition as one of Greater Washington’s best community-based charities by the Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington. Being re-featured online by the Catalogue reflects LCAC’s status as a highly effective local charity, working to enhance the quality of life in our community by providing food, basic needs, and self-sufficiency programs through the generous support of our community.

LCAC was selected to be re-featured online in the 14th annual Catalogue for Philanthropy, which has, since 2003, connected caring citizens with worthy community causes and raised more than $33 million for featured nonprofits.

The Catalogue’s vetting process is rigorous: members of a 130-person review team, made up of foundations, corporations, peer nonprofits and the philanthropic advisory community, evaluate charities on the basis of program impact and fiscal soundness, and each featured charity is visited on-site by at least one member of the review team.

“Donors know they can trust the Catalogue to help them make smart decisions about local nonprofits where their contributions will really make a difference,” notes Catalogue President Barbara Harman. “The Washington, DC region has one of the greatest wealth disparities in the nation – one of the most affluent (and well-educated) populations in the country, and also one of the poorest. We are in a unique position to help our neighbors by connecting donors and volunteers to worthy, local nonprofits working to strengthen the D.C. region. The Catalogue makes it easy to learn about community needs and to help meet them.”

In November, the Catalogue’s website will be promoted to 25,000 individuals and hundreds of family foundations.

LCAC celebrates its volunteers during National Volunteer Week

Volunteers-2012 (1)

There is a common expression that “volunteers are the life blood of a nonprofit organization.” This phrase certainly rings true for the Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC), a human services nonprofit providing emergency food and financial assistance along with self sufficiency programs to thousands of individuals in southeast Fairfax County, Virginia. LCAC would not be able to offer the services that it does without the amazing dedication and passion of hundreds of volunteers.

As part of National Volunteer Week (April 15 – 21), LCAC hosted, with the generous help of the Mason Neck Lion’s Club, a “Thank you Open House” for LCAC volunteers on Wednesday, April 18. The Mason Neck Lion’s Club generously provided and grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and LCAC Board members and staff prepared side dishes and desserts for the gathering. Since many volunteers work on a specific day of the week, they often do not get the chance to meet other individuals who volunteer in the same programmatic area much less other areas within the organization. In addition to saying “Thank You,” the Open House also provided a way for volunteers to socialize with volunteers across all areas of LCAC.

In FY 2011 (July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011), individuals and groups donated 11,195 hours of their time which represents a value of $234,937! There are a myriad of programmatic areas where people typically volunteer at LCAC, including the food program, thrift store, administrative, tutoring, special events, holiday food distribution, back-to-school, furniture pick-up and food collection. LCAC has over 500 active volunteers.
